Welcome to the Bonn Alliance!
Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research
The Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research was founded in November 2017 at COP23 under the leadership of the University of Bonn with the aim of strengthening knowledge and competences for sustainable development. Six established Bonn institutions are behind this alliance: BICC (Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies), the German Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDOS), the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein Sieg, University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS), the Institute for Environment and Human Security of the United Nations University (UNU-EHS) and the University of Bonn with its Center for Development Research (ZEF).
Our Mission
Policy- and practice-relevant research on sustainability, which takes place in a dialogue between science, business and politics and extends from the local context to the global level, is extremely complex. An understanding of the various social, political and ecological contexts is necessary; this requires communication with a large number of actors at the local and international level and well-connected experts in various fields.
The Bonn Alliance takes into account the complexity of the problems and issues in the sustainability landscape through networked science. The common goal is to scientifically support the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030 on a local to global level. To this end, the Bonn Alliance and its partner institutions combine university and non-university, applied and basic research.
BICC (Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies), the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and the Institute for Environment and Human Securit of the United Nations University (UNU-EHS) are non-university institutes that deal with different dimensions of sustainability and global change from the perspective of development research or peace and conflict research in an interdisciplinary way and organize their research in high-performance worldwide networks.
As a university of applied sciences, the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (H-BRS) focuses in particular on the transfer of science to a sustainable economy. With its International Center for Sustainable Development (IZNE), it conducts research on innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainable development.
The Excellence University of Bonn brings together disciplinary sustainability research in the so-called Transdisciplinary Research Area “Innovation and Technology for a Sustainable Future”. With the Center for Development Research (ZEF), it also has an interdisciplinary research institution that conducts international research on development issues and key sustainability topics.
The policy relevance of the Bonn Alliance partner institutes is evident from the fact that IDOS, BICC and ZEF have been listed among the most influential global think tanks for years.
The scientific direction of the Bonn Alliance is made possible by the financial support of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Ministry of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for Culture and Science, MKW) and contributions from the University of Bonn.
